One nabbed for murders

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: An alleged criminal wanted in many cases of murder, attempt to murder, extortion and motor vehicle theft has been arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi police. He allegedly used to extort money at the behest of a businessman in Haryana but had killed him earlier this year following a dispute over distribution of the extorted amount.

A Crime Branch team apprehended the accused, Sandeep Chitana, a resident of Sonepat in Haryana, following an exchange of fire near Munirka bus stand in South-West Delhi on Friday. A country-made revolver and a robbed motorcycle were seized from his possession.

The police said Sandeep, carrying a reward of Rs. 15,000 on his head, worked for Ramesh Singla, a famous businessman in Sonepat, who also used to provide shelter to criminals. Ramesh used to send him to extort money from his own business associates.

He used to take the lion's share and give the rest to Sandeep and his accomplices. Since Ramesh had political connections, none of the victims dared to complain against him or Sandeep.

Sandeep was earlier arrested by the Crime Branch in June 2004 in connection with several cases. He came out on bail three months later and began staying with his maternal uncle at Bawana in North-West Delhi.

He also bought an earthmover which he used to deploy for petty contract works taken up by his uncle. However, Sandeep did not relinquish his connections with Singla and continued to extort money on his behalf.

This year, Sandeep began demanding a larger share of the extortion money but Singla did not agree. Sandeep and his accomplice Suresh Jakhodia then shot him dead in broad daylight.

Sandeep also told the police that he intended to eliminate the witnesses in his case. His accomplice Suresh has already been arrested by Bahadurgarh police. Further investigations in the case are on.
