Panel's surprise visit to beach volleyball venue

Women participants complain of lack of accommodation facilities

HYDERABAD: Following "requisitions" from women participants of the ongoing beach volleyball tournament in the city over "lack of accommodation facilities", members of the Andhra Pradesh Women's Commission on Friday conducted surprise visits to the tournament venue at Necklace road and the sports hostel near Lal Bahadur stadium.

However, the visit, for which mediapersons were taken along, hardly threw any light on the alleged lack of facilities. While there were only a couple of players at the venue, there were none in the hostel. The Commission, led by N. Padmaja Reddy and including M. Saraswathi Devi, K. Renuka Reddy and Shabana Momin, said that the players had conveyed to them that they were denied floodlights for indoor practice, which, however, was offered to the boys.

"The Commission has enquired about this with the authorities and has told them that gender-bias will be viewed seriously," Ms. Reddy said.
