Water level in Alamatti touches 517 m

Raichur-Belgaum road cut off

BIJAPUR: The Krishna continues to flow at danger level even as the water level in Alamatti Dam touched the 517-metre mark on Sunday as against the full reservoir level of 519.6 metres. This is the highest mark for the current season. It was 514 metres in the corresponding period during last year.

The inflow on Sunday was 1,85,223 cusecs. The discharge from the dam was increased to 1,80,983 cusecs from Saturday's 1,71,705 cusecs.

Twenty of the 26 crest gates have partially been opened.

According to report from the Central Water Commission, there would be a fall in inflow into Alamatti Dam in the next 24 hours, Chief Engineer of

Alamatti Dam Zone Siddagangappa told The Hindu .

Water level in the Narayanpur Reservoir that comes 60 km downstream of the dam was 490.7 metres as against the full reservoir level of 492.25 metres. While the inflow was 1.82 lakh cusecs, the outflow was 1.85 lakh cusecs. Storage was 25.2 tmcft on Sunday, sources said.

Following the increase in water level of Alamatti Dam, the Raichur-Belgaum Road was cut off at Mahararudrappanahalli near Bagalkot. A road between Takkodand and Takkalaki villages in Jamkhandi taluk was inundated. Chinagundigadde, a small habitation near Chikkapadasalagi, was cut off. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin reviewed contingency plan for possible flood situation in Krishna and Bhima rivers.

Presiding over the meeting of the district level task force on natural calamity here, he asked the district and taluk-level officers to be ready to face any eventuality. Seven boats fitted with engines were available.

He announced that a 24-hour help desk has been set up with three dedicated phone numbers. They are 1077, 250479 and 251289.
