KATHMANDU: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Nayan Bahadur Khatri and Chief Election Commissioner Keshav Raj Rajbhandari announced their resignation on Sunday to avoid possible impeachment by Parliament. All the Government-nominated NHRC Commissioners also resigned along with Mr. Khatri amid a press conference. Mr. Rajbhandari, speaking to journalists, said, "I have sent my resignation to the Prime Minister's Office today." The parliamentarians had reached a consensus on Friday to impeach the NHRC and the E.C. officials for their support to the King's seizure of power in February 2005. The lawmakers were angry with Mr. Rajbhandari for conducting a "sham" local election to "legitimise" the King's rule. Mr. Khatri was charged with justifying the King's coup in the international fora. The lawmakers were preparing to table the impeachment motion in the House on Sunday.
Policies, programmes
The Government on Sunday presented its annual programmes and policies in the House of Representatives (HoR). Presenting the programme on behalf of ailing Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Khadga Prasad Oli said the Government would give top priority to establishing lasting peace. It was again a break with tradition since the King presented the programmes in Parliament on behalf of the Government. The reinstated House scrapped the concept of King-in-Parliament.
