Unabated sand mining along Cauvery basin

Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: The unabated sand mining, some of which illegal, on the course of the Cauvery in Mysore district, to meet the booming construction industry in Bangalore and Mysore, has raised environmental concerns.

Following the ban imposed on sand mining in the river course of Shimsha and Cauvery in Mandya district, the contractors of sand mining are on a prowl on the banks of Cauvery in Mysore district.

The illegal sand mining taking place in at least five places near Mudukthore in course of the Cauvery near Talakad were due to the ban in Mandya.

State convener of Dalita Maha Sabha, S. Sundar Hanakalo, told The Hindu that sand mining near Talakad commenced on a small scale a couple of years ago, and became a menace recently after the Deputy Commissioner of Mandya district banned mining in Malavalli area.

The mining, he pointed out, would affect the aquatic life in the Cauvery, and also pollute the river through various means. Around 2,500 lorries transport sand from Talakad area to construction sites in Mysore and Bangalore, and in most cases they were overloaded.

Demanding action against those indulging in sand mining, Mr. Sundar said that the district administration had to impose prohibitory orders under Section 144 of IPC in the manner in which Mandya district administration prevented mining.
