KOZHIKODE: Forest Minister Benoy Viswom on Sunday inaugurated the project for the conservation and beautification of the Wayanad Ghat Road. The project has been drawn up by environmentalists' groups and students of Kozhikode and Wayand districts. The first phase of the five-year conservation drive was launched at a programme held at Lakkidi, near here, on Sunday. Mr. Viswom said the Government was in the process of chalking out a clear tourism policy for the economic and social development of the State. The technical support of the Forest Department and the protection of the Police Department would be available for implementing the scheme, he said. Abraham Benhur presided over the function. Environmentalists representing different groups were present. The Wayanad Ghat Road, which is the primary link between Kozhikode and Wayanad districts, is well-known for its picturesque sights as it winds up to an altitude of 2,700 feet above sea level. The 12-km High Range road on the fringes of the Western Ghats has been divided into 12 divisions. NSS volunteers of colleges under the Calicut University would be placed in charge of each division.
