PONDICHERRY: The police have heightened their vigil against drunken drivers. The incident that happened a couple of days ago, in which three motorcyclists died in a head on collision on 100 ft road, have swung the police into action. According to police, two of them have consumed alcohol and was driving in a rash manner. On Friday night, the police suddenly sprung into action and checked vehicles plying on the 100 ft road, which has a number of wine shops on either side. Vijayasundaram, S.P. Traffic, told The Hindu that 250 vehicles were checked on one night. Those on wheels were asked to blow into the alcho-meter, a device to find the presence of alcohol in the body. Twenty-five persons, majority of them motorcyclists, were found to have consumed drinks while driving, he noted. After impounding their vehicles, cases were registered. "The fine for the offence would be decided by the court," he added. Even cyclists were checked and those found to have taken alcohol were warned. "We cannot take action against them since they do not come under the Motor Vehicles Act." Many accidents were reported due to the rash peddling by cyclists after drinking, the SP said. The police had formed a special team to intensify the drive in the coming days and planned to surprise checks.
