Samiti not to attend meet called by Minister

Staff Correspondent

BIJAPUR: The Indi (Guttibasavanna) Etha Neeravari Horata Samiti has decided not to participate in the meeting called by Water Resources Minister K.S. Eshwarappa on Monday. Farmers from 25 villages in Indi taluk have been agitating under the banner of the samiti at Thamba

village for the past 42 days in support of their demand that the Indi Lift Irrigation Scheme be implemented up to the 147-km stretch as per the "original" plan. The farmers, who initially launched a dharna, are on a relay hunger strike since June 16.

Samiti president Mallaiah Sarangamath said that they would not be participating in the meeting. Political leaders from the district should have discussed the issue with the samiti before finalising the names of those to be included in the delegation. However, now Bijapur MP Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal and Appasaheb Pattanashetti and R.K. Rathod, MLAs, would be leading separate delegations, and the samiti had decided to distance itself from them.
