Probe ordered into bus crew abandoning passenger's body

CHENNAI: The State Human Rights Commission has ordered an investigation into an incident in which the crew of a State Transport Corporation bus abandoned the body of a passenger in front of a government hospital.

Taking suo motu cognisance of a report appeared in a Tamil daily, Commission's acting Chairperson Justice S. Thangaraj has sought a report from the Additional Director-General of Police within three weeks.

According to the report, the passenger was travelling by a bus from Tambaram to Tindivanam (route no.121) when he died of heart attack. Co-passengers informed the driver. The crew brought down the body, laid it in a bus stop, in front of the government hospital, at Chengalpattu and went away without informing any one. The report said the body was lying there for some time before the public informed the police. It was later identified.

Mr. Justice Thangaraj has also asked the ADGP to investigate the death of a person after his arrest and submit a report to the Commission in three weeks. Raja (28) alias Robert of Alangayam was a suspect in a case registered in the Alangayam station under Section 457 (lurking house-trespass or house-breaking by night to commit offence punishable with imprisonment) and 380 (theft in dwelling house) of the IPC, last month.

He was arrested by the Vaniyambadi town police under Section 41 Cr.P.C. ( arrest without warrant). Later, he was found dead. A case was registered under Section 174 Cr.P.C and the First Information Report was sent to the RDO, Tirupattur.
