KEEPING COOL: Kids dive into the Dal Lake to beat the heat in Srinagar on Sunday.
SRINAGAR: With no let up in the heat wave sweeping the Kashmir Valley, Jammu and Kashmir Government has announced a ten-day summer vacation for schools beginning Monday. All schools up to 12th class including private schools would take a summer break from July 10 to 19, as per an order issued by Directorate of School Education. However, schools in Karnah tehsil in Kashmir division and districts of Kargil and Leh will remain open during the period, the order said. It said the examinations of the remaining papers of class 11th has also been postponed and a revised schedule would be notified separately. The Met office here said the maximum temperature recorded in the State was 35.5 degrees Celsius, above five degrees normal. Incidentally, temperature in Srinagar City was slightly higher than that recorded in the winter capital Jammu at 35.0 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in the J&K summer capital was at 24.4 degrees Celsius, which was several degrees above normal. The Met office predicted some respite for the people from hot and humid weather conditions during the next few days. The residents of several parts of the Srinagar and the Valley have complained of acute shortage of drinking water and electricity. Several areas in the city were without electricity for many hours yesterday and today. However, reports received from Pahalgam and Gulmarg hills said that pleasant weather conditions prevailed in these resorts much to the delight of a large number of tourists. - PTI & UNI
