SNDP to implead in

writ plea filed by NSS

PATHANAMTHITTA: Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan said here on Sunday that the Yogam would implead in the writ filed by the Nair Service Society before the Kerala High Court, challenging the Travancore Devaswom Board decision to implement 33 per cent job reservation for backward communities appointments to the Board. Talking to reporters in Adoor, Mr Natesan said the Yogam has been demanding job reservation in the TDB for the past several years. He said the Yogam had proposed M.B. Sreekumar as its nominee to the TDB with a view to press its long-pending demand for job reservation in the Board. — Staff Reporter

More seats

sanctioned

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has sanctioned 10 per cent more seats for each course (over and above the current sanctioned strength for each course) in Government and aided higher secondary schools in the State, a press note issued here on Sunday said. The Government has done this taking into account the heavy rush for `Plus one' admissions this year, the press note added. — Staff Reporter

Death of Teresa

Vijayan condoled

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government on Sunday condoled the death of Teresa Vijayan, wife of writer O.V. Vijayan, in Secunderabad on Saturday. Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran visited her residence on Saturday to pay the last respects on behalf of the Government, an official press release said. Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy, in a statement, expressed grief over Dr. Teresa Vijayan's death. — Special Correspondent

Sangh Parivar activists continue fast

Kannur: The relay fast by members of the Sangh Parivar here to protest against the arrest of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader Valsan Thillankery in connection with the murder of CPI(M) worker Yakub continued for the third day on Sunday. Inaugurating the third-day fast, Kerala BJP president P.S. Sreedharan Pillai alleged that Valsan had been falsely implicated in the case. He said the Sangh Parivar had taken the arrest as a challenge and it would continue to protest against the injustice done to Valsan. — UNI

Explosives seized

from Puthur

KOLLAM: Acting on a tip-off, the Kottarakara police seized explosives worth more than Rs.1 lakh from a private premises at Puthur on Saturday night. The police said Sivadasan (51) had been arrested in this connection. Sivadasan did not possess a licence to store such quantity of explosives, the police said adding that two similar cases were pending against him. — Staff Reporter

Woman gang-raped

KANNUR: A 28-year-old woman was gang-raped at Poothappara under the Valapattanam police station limits here on Friday evening.

According to the police, the victim was abducted from Arayakandyppara on July 7 evening by a group of youth who forced her into a car. She was taken to an uninhabited house in the nearby area and gang-raped, the police said. The police said four youths had been taken into custody for questioning following a complaint preferred by the victim. — Staff Reporter

ICWAI classes

KOCHI: The Cochin Chapter of the Southern India Regional Council of the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the St.Alberts College, Ernakulam, for starting a foundation course in ICWAI. The classes will be held on Saturdays and Sundays. The programme is scheduled to begin from July 17, according to a press release issued by the institute. — Staff Reporter

Victor George remembered

Thrissur: A meeting was held at the Thrissur Press Club here on Sunday in remembrance of photographer Victor George.

Addressing the gathering, film director Kamal recalled Victor George's services. "I have met him only once. But in the informal chat we had, I could sense the artist in him," Mr. Kamal said. Delivering a lecture, Rajaji Mathew Thomas MLA, urged the media to objectively report atrocities against women, child abuse and human rights violations. The meeting was followed by the screening of `Monsoon Anuraga,' a visual presentation on different aspects of rain by photographers Arun Sreedhar and Rajesh. — Staff Reporter

`Extend pay revision benefits'

KASARAGOD: The Kerala State Retired Teachers and Employees' Union (KSRTEU) has asked the Government to extend the pay revision to teachers and employees retired during the period between March 1, 2002, and June 30, 2004 also. A resolution adopted at a meeting to mark the State-level inauguration of the KSRTEU's district convention said the denial of pay revision benefits to the teachers and employees was deplorable. — Staff Reporter

Hindustani concert held

Thrissur: A Hindustani music programme was held at the Chetana Music Akademi here on Saturday. The programme included a recital by Dinesh Devadas of Uttaranchal and a choral rendering of Hindustani compositions featuring Jyotsna, Rachana John, Shalini, Divya, Syama and Divya S.
