Funds allotted for

civic amenities

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has allocated Rs. 275 lakhs for upgradation of civic amenities in the city's industrial hubs under its Phase-I and II programme.

The programme to begin after the monsoon will see dense carpeting of roads besides other measures in areas where industries were concentrated, said MCD Standing Committee chairman Jaikishan Sharma addressing members of the Delhi Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Sunday. He said the MCD would provide better amenities like more public toilets, urinals and handpumps in industrial areas. "Cooperation of factory owners and industrialists was imperative to the schemes' success. Funds would not be a constraint for schemes related to public utilities," he added.

Educationist remembered

NEW DELHI: On the occasion of the birth centenary of D.S. Kothari, the internationally renowned physicist and educationist, a book "Vision and Values: Essays in Honour of Prof. D.S. Kothari" was released by the President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam over the weekend, an Indira Gandhi National Open University release said.

On the occasion, academicians at IGNOU remembered his significant contribution in the field of education. Acting Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, S.C. Garg, in a communication informed that Prof. Kothari was Chairman of the University Grants Commission from 1962 to 1973 and Chairman of the Education Commission from 1964 to 1966.

Shiv Sena demonstration

NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena activists staged a demonstration in the trans-Yamuna area on Sunday in protest against the desecration of a statue of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray's late wife Meenatai in Central Mumbai. Led by Delhi unit Shiv Sena chief Jai Bhagwan Goyal, the party workers set ablaze an effigy of a Mumbai-based Samajwadi Party leader and demanded the immediate dismissal of the State Government.

Risk of colon cancer

NEW DELHI: Adults with fat around the middle of their body face the risk of colon cancer, Heart Care Foundation of Indian president K.K. Aggarwal has said.

He said that according to research done among adults from nine European countries, people with large waistlines were found to be developing colon cancer more than people with trim waistline.

Another study also found that abdominal fat holds a particular influence over colon cancer risk. This kind of fat is more "metabolically active" and people with type 2 diabetes have a greater rate of colon cancer, he said.
