Protest over power crisis

Staff Reporter

"Sheila going soft on private power distribution companies"

NEW DELHI: Protesting against the deteriorating power situation in the Capital, a large number of East Delhi residents staged a demonstration on Sunday accusing Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit of having failed to arrange for more electricity for the power-starved city and going soft on private power distribution companies.

Assembled under the banner of United Residents Joint Action (URJA), a group of Delhi's residents' welfare associations, a large number of residents from Patparganj, Krishna Nagar and Mayur Vihar Phase II and III shouted slogans against the Congress Government in the Capital. They also alleged that private power distribution companies were not listening to their grievances and harassing them. According to URJA convenor Promod Chawla, the Delhi Government has failed miserably in arranging electricity for its citizens from power-surplus States. "The State Government failed to anticipate demand for more power from residents and did not tie up with power producers, leaving people in lurch," he added.

People have to take to streets at several places to protest against Ms. Dikshit's poor governance, said URJA's East Delhi convenor Rajesh Dokhwal, adding that due to massive power shortage and unscheduled power cuts, residents were unable to sleep at night and their daily routine has been severely affected. Asking the Government to deal with the power crunch situation on priority, he said several areas of East Delhi were not receiving power for hours.

People also blamed the Delhi Government for having missed several World Cup football matches. Several housewives also took part in the demonstration and highlighted how due to long power cuts they were unable to get cold water and store food articles as their refrigerators were not functioning.
