Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy said here on Sunday that lack of mutual trust among the major partners and internal problems in the Communist Party of India (Marxist) were two main issues responsible for the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government's "poor show." In a statement on his assessment of the 50-day-old LDF Government, Mr. Chandy said the Government had failed to start functioning or create an impact in the political and administrative sectors despite coming to power on the strength of an overwhelming verdict by the people.
`Lacks CPI(M) support'
The Government lacked the support of the CPI(M), he said. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan was following his own course of functioning, while the Cabinet Ministers were on their own. Lack of mutual trust and confidence was evident in the LDF Government, which was functioning without any direction, Mr. Chandy said. The Opposition leader said the LDF did not appear to be interested in ruling the State and producing results. It has continued to adopt negative positions, upholding outdated tenets. As usual, the LDF leaders are trying to put the blame on others for their non-performance. He said the State had already witnessed several developments that clearly indicated that all was not well within the LDF Government. It was trying to put the blame on officials for its failures, as was seen in the manner with which it handled the fax messages relating to minority status of self-financing colleges. The LDF Government, through some of its actions such as the withdrawal of the Headload Workers Act, had destroyed the investor-friendly climate in the State. Mr. Chandy said the LDF Government had virtually abandoned several social welfare schemes introduced by his Government such as the Rs.3-kg rice scheme and the Ashraya project. Some of the development projects initiated by the United Democratic Front had been put on the backburner. These projects include Smart City, the Vizhinjam harbour development and Kochi Metro railway. In the field of agriculture, the LDF Government had nothing more than its predecessor UDF. Mr. Chandy said his Government had announced a series of packages, including moratorium and had implemented them, while the LDF Government's announcement of a farm package, including reduction of farm loans advanced through cooperative societies, remained on paper.
