Thiruvananthapuram: A tense situation was prevailing in Kattakada following a clash between Hindu Aikya Vedi workers and members of a Christian religious mission on Sunday morning. Two members of the religious mission, Samuel and Jayakumar, who were injured in the clash, have been admitted to the Kattakada Government Hospital. According to police, the violence occurred when Hindu Aikya Vedi workers allegedly trespassed into a prayer hall run by the religious mission at Kallikadu around 10.30 a.m. In the evening, Hindu Aikya Vedi staged a march in Kallikadu accusing the religious mission of attacking Vedi activists. Meanwhile, the police have detained five persons, suspected to be Rashtriya Swayam Sevak workers, in connection with the incident. A police team lead by Circle Inspector Kattakada, Saifudeen was camping in the area. The police have intensified night patrolling and searching of vehicles.
Three killed in accidents
Three persons were killed in different accidents involving motorbikes in the district on Monday night. Two persons were killed when the motorbike on which they were travelling collided with a KSRTC bus at Aralanmoodu around 8.30 p.m. The police identified one of the deceased as Jose of Kadiyapattanam in Tamil Nadu. The identity of the person who was riding pillion on the bike driven by Jose was yet to be known. In another accident, a 30-year-old man was killed when the motorbike on which he was travelling collided with a vehicle in front of the Army Branch Recruitment Office at Pangode around 12.15 a.m. on Tuesday. The police identified the deceased as Shiju. The vehicle involved in the accident was yet to be identified.
Drunken driving
As many as 67 persons were held for drunken driving in the intensive drive carried out in the rural areas of the district on Saturday night. Another 266 persons found violating traffic and Motor Vehicles Rules were also booked during the combing operations carried out as per the instructions of the Superintendent of Police, Rural, Yogesh Gupta. Action was also initiated against 17 persons who were involved in cases and were absconding and against 196 others for other offences. The rural police have also registered three cases for illegal storage of liquor.
