Stray dog menace

Though the City Corporation had taken steps to check stray dog menace, over a two dozen dogs are still ruling the roost in and around Uppidamoodu Bridge at Kaithamukku, causing hardship to temple goers and two-wheeler riders. The stray dogs in the compound of the District Court at Vanchiyur have become a cause of concern to the public. The Corporation authorities should take immediate steps to check this menace.

Refurbishing water transport

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam had called for a water transport system through the backwaters of Kerala that would benefit trade as well as provide cheaper means of transport. For this, the Parvathiputhanar beautification work has to be carried out more earnestly. Although the dredging work of the canal from Veli to Kollam has been partially completed, the progress is slow. The work on the sidewalls for retaining the soil on the banks of the canal was yet to start. Boat services through the backwaters, as in the period of erstwhile Travancore, would greatly benefit the common man.

Rising crime graph

Those who thought that the crime rate in the city would come down with the Left Democratic Front coming to power are disappointed. If media reports are to be believed, not a single day passes without a crime being reported in the city. Criminals are in jail one day and are out on bail the next day only to indulge in more crimes. Cannot these people be kept under preventive custody? However, the sad part is many of these elements are patronised by powers-that-be for their own benefit.
