Rs. 1,20,000 cr to be spent in next 10 years

BANGALORE: The Union Government has proposed to spend Rs. 1,20,000 crore during the next 10 years under the National Rural Health Mission, Union Minister of State for Planning, M.V. Rajasekharan, has said.

At a function organised to mark the 15th anniversary of Bangalore Hospital here on Saturday, Mr. Rajasekharan sought equal participation from the private sector to make the health mission successful and ensure health to all.

He said public expenditure on health by the Union Government was 1.3 per cent in 1992-93, while it was 4.96 per cent by the State. The per capita public expenditure on health was Rs. 205.56 by the Union Government and Rs. 238.38 by the State, which was low, he said and added that top priority was accorded to the health sector under the XI Plan.

Urging doctors to serve in rural areas, Mr. Rajasekharan said the health situation in rural areas was bad. There were 125 to 180 cancer centres in the country but the need was for at least 800 to 900 such centres.

The Minister presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Lt. Gen. D. Raghunath (retd). Two more awards for "The most valuable employee" (C.T.S. Krishnamurthi, cashier) and "The best employee of the year" (Jessy Jose) were given away.
