This Day That Age
Over 60,000 people took part in the famous annual car festival of Lord Jagannath at Puri on July 9. The procession of cars commenced at 2.30 p.m., at least two hours earlier than in the past. The ceremony of taking out the presiding deities of Lord Jagannath, his brother Balabhadra and their sister Subhadra, made of massive logs of wood, commenced at about ten. By 1.30 p.m. the Chera Pahara (sweeping of the floors of the cars), normally done by the Raja of Puri, was performed by the Bada Panda (big priest) in the absence of the Raja due to indisposition.
