Lemont : Daniel Chopra failed to conjure up the form he showed on the first two days, as he carded a final round of two-over 73 and ended tied 30th at the Cialis Western Open here on Sunday. Having led the field in the first two rounds, Chopra finished with a total of 3-under 281. South African Trevor Immelman won the title, his first on the PGA Tour, as he staved off a surging Tiger Woods. Immelman sank a stunning 32-foot birdie on the final hole for a card of 67 and tallied 13-under-par 271. Woods (68) finished tied second with Matthew Goggin (69) with an overall 11-under 273. Third round leader Vijay Singh (73) was tied fourth with five others including Stewart Cink (71) and Jim Furyk (70). Arjun Atwal has fallen outside the top-125 who get exemption for the following season. The Indian ace made just six cuts in 19 starts and his earnings of $370,008 placed him only 132nd. Chopra began the final day well with a birdie on the first, but he gave that back with a bogey on fourth. Another birdie on sixth was followed by a bogey on eighth as he turned in even par. On the back nine, he bogeyed the 10th and 14th, and even a birdie on 15th did not help matters as he dropped another shot on 17th. His putts did not fall and he was straying with his drive too. This season Chopra has made 13 cuts in 20 starts and has two top-10 finishes and four others in top-25. He has earned just under 697,000 and is now 77th on the money list.
Jeev misses out
At Kildare, a missed final hole birdie made all the difference as Jeev Milkha Singh narrowly missed out on the British Open while finishing tied-fourth at the Smurfit European Open golf championship on Sunday. Anthony Wall (73) of England achieved what the Indian failed to, with a birdie on the final hole and finish tied second with Jose Manuel Lara (74) while the title went to Stephen Dodd (70). Jeev carded an excellent two-under 70 but it proved to be not good enough as he needed to finish second to book a ticket to one of four Majors. That excellent finish, however, should inspire faith in the Chandigarh lad as one last British Open berth remains to be taken coming week. PTI
