Dharna against `contract labour' system in mines

Staff Correspondent

Workers seek abolition of the system and wages through the company

IN PROTEST: Members of AITUC and DSS staging a dharna in Raichur on Monday.

Raichur: Members of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and the Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) staged a dharna here on Monday in protest against the contract labour system "adopted" by the Hutti Gold Mines Company Limited at its Hirabuddinni and Uti opencast mines in Raichur district.

They demanded that the system be abolished and wages be paid through the company treating them as daily wage workers.

Nearly 100 activists took out a procession to the Deputy Commissioner's office where they staged the dharna.

They said the Hutti Gold Mines Company had engaged nearly 200 workers on contract basis and their wages were paid through contractors.

But the contractors had failed to ensure regular payments.

The workers had not been paid for the past three months, they said.

They also sought the immediate release of pending wages.
