HUBLI: A single-seater hovercraft designed by students of the automobile engineering section of B.V. Bhoomaraddi College of Engineering and Technology has been selected for the State-level exhibition and competition to be held in Gulbarga in September. The eighth semester B.E. (Automobile Engineering) students Mayur, Aditya, Praveen and Mohan designed and fabricated this single-seater hovercraft under the guidance of Veeresh Angadi. The hovercraft, with a payload of 100 kg (including the weight of the components and other accessories), has been fabricated with locally available materials. The project was sponsored by the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST), Bangalore. The inspection team of KSCST, including experts from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) that visited the institute to evaluate the project, lauded the efforts of the students, according to T. Veeramahantesh Swamy, head of the Automobile Engineering Department of the college and principal Ashok Shettar. The hovercraft is mainly used for Defence purposes. But this single-seater, if further developed, could be used in port cities, Prof. Veeresh Angadi said. He told this correspondent that the hovercraft's working model had been developed by the students at a cost of around Rs. 9,000. Right now it runs on electricity, and a battery could be installed, which may cost another Rs. 2,000, he said.
