Letters to the Editor
The sight of the great Zinedine Zidane head-butting Marco Materazzi in the chest was the saddest sight of the entire tournament. It was a body blow to the spirit of the game.
C.P. Srinivasan,
I still cannot understand what prompted such a cool-headed player like Zidane to act the way he did. And to think that he did it in a World Cup final!
An unfortunate act that has not brought any laurels to Zidane, his team or his nation. No doubt he was closely marked throughout the game but that did not give him the right to head-butt his opponent.
C. Mohammed Saleha,
A black spot in a legendary career. I feel Zidane's departure, after being showed the red card, was one of the reasons for France's defeat. Frustration is normal but the way the maestro reacted does not suit a player of his class.
No soccer lover would have wished to see Zidane end his career in this fashion. Had he stayed cool, France might have won and provided him with the chance to go out on a high note.
It is unfortunate that Zidane disgraced the game that was his life for long. What a fall! Congrats Italy.
R. Jayashree,
