Letters to the Editor
The desecration of the statue of Meenatai Thackeray, wife of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray, in Mumbai's Shivaji Park is a condemnable act and the Maharashtra Government must bring the culprits to books without delay. At the same time, the reaction of Shiv Sainiks and the utterances of their leaders are equally condemnable. The party leaders allegedly incited their cadre to resort to violence and destroy public property. This sort of response from a party that once ruled the State must be put down with a heavy hand.
Destruction of public property to show one's anger is not civilised behaviour and will not solve any problem. The lay public and the Opposition should help the Government bring the culprits to book at the earliest.
At a time when Mumbai and many parts of Maharashtra are limping back to normal after last week's rain, the rampage by Shiv Sainiks has added to the hardships of the common man. Instead of trying to defusing the situation, some leaders of the Shiv Sena have allegedly goaded their cadre into destroying public property over the incident. This is unfortunate.
