KOZHIKODE: Malabar was not actually speaking German this past one month, but it seemed as though the people of the region that comprises northern Kerala were concerned only about what was happening in Germany. Few regions outside of the 32 countries that played in Germany would have followed the football World Cup with as much passion. Most of the population went to bed only after the last match of the night was over. Many cinemas in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Palakkad, Kannur, Kasaragod and Wayanad districts, stopped regular shows and beamed World Cup matches live, on contract with ESPN. While most of the country backed just a few top teams such as Brazil, Argentina, Germany and England, one club in Kozhikode, the Ninamvalappu Football Fans Association, had 32 groups of fans.
