Meet on postpartum haemorrhage in Goa

Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: J.N. Medical College, run by KLE Academy of Higher Education (KAHE) and Research, which is a deemed university, will organise an international congress on "Postpartum haemorrhage — evidence-based interventions to prevent postpartum haemorrhage: translating research into practice" at Park Hyatt Resort in Goa for four days from July 12.

According to a KAHE release here on Monday, maternal deaths in India were a major public health problem and approximately 300 to 700 women died per 1,00,000 childbirths. A majority of these maternal deaths occurred during childbirth because of excessive bleeding. Most women, who gave birth in rural areas, did not receive any preventive medications.

Misoprostol tablets given orally had been advocated for preventing excessive bleeding. The feasibility of using this drug in community setting had not been tested so far. Thus, the college in collaboration with the University of Missouri at Kansas City, School of Medicine under the auspices of National Institute of Child Health and Human Development; U.S., conducted a research study to test the feasibility of using Oral Misoprostol for prevention of postpartum haemorrhage in deliveries occurring at homes or sub-centre facilities.

The study was conducted at four Primary Health Centre areas — Hirebagewadi, Neginhal, Bhendigeri, Yamakanmaradi of Belgaum district.

To disseminate the findings of the project, KAHE had organised the Congress, which would bring together researchers, medical professionals, policy makers and programme implementation personnel on a common platform.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Indian Council of Medical Research, besides the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), UNICEF, NICHD, JHPIEGO, ACCESS, and POPPHI were the other international agencies supporting this event.
