VISAKHAPATNAM: The Visakhapatnam city division of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) has bagged the highest fuel efficiency award (average of 5.44 km per litre of diesel) for 2004-05 from the Association of State Road Transport Undertakings (ASRTU), New Delhi. This is the second consecutive time the division is getting the award and 24th time by the APSRTC. Interestingly so far the award has been given only 29 times and a majority of them have been bagged by the APSRTC.
List of depots
RTC's Visakhapatnam Regional manager D Satyanarayana who received the award recently at a function in New Delhi said that during 2004-05 the Maddilapalem depot achieved fuel efficiency of 5.50 km per litre, Waltair depot 5.45, Simhachalam 5.26, Gajuwaka 5.36 and Steel City 5.69 km per litre and the total average for the region worked out to be 5.44 km per litre. The Vizag city division is operating 1.55 lakh km per day with 554 buses and carrying 4.36 lakh passengers. Thanking all the officers, drivers and staff of the division who contributed for getting the award, he said higher fuel efficiency not only cuts down the diesel bill but also drastically reduced pollution. Mr. Satyanarayana said the region had plans to operate one more Volvo bus service each to Hyderabad, Bangalore and Raipur via Jeypore, Navrangpur and Umarkot (Orissa). Presently such services are being operated to Hyderabad (three services), and one service each to Chennai, Tirupati and Vijayawada. Similarly two more mini buses would be introduced on the Anakapalli-Chodavaram and one mini bus on Narsipatnam-Sarugudu routes, he said. To help passengers of the hi-tech Volvo services an air-conditioned lounge `Volvo corner' was opened in the city bus station. All facilities, including cozy seats, water, time table books, cell phone chargers and colour television with DVD attachment were provided in waiting room, he said.
