Bangalore: The Karnataka Unaided School Managements Association has expressed surprise at the recent government circular withdrawing the option given to students from other States or those changing over from the Central to the State syllabus to opt for alternative English instead of Kannada in the SSLC examination. According to the circular issued by the Education Department, from April 2007 such students also have to write the Kannada second language paper. Association president G.S. Sharma said it would be impossible for non-Kannadiga students to study the language and take the examination in 10 months. Considering the serious consequences, the Government should modify its circular to enable students to opt for alternative English as their second language for the March 2007 and 2008 examinations and enforce the order subsequently, he said.
