Process to appoint Lokayukta begins

Staff Reporter

Chief Minister writes to presiding officers, Opposition leaders

BANGALORE: The State Government has initiated the process of appointing a new Lokayukta to succeed N. Venkatachala, whose tenure ended about a week ago.

Sources in the State Government told The Hindu here that one of the names under consideration was that of the former Supreme Court judge N. Santosh Hegde, who is presently chairman of the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who turned down the demand for another term for Mr. Venkatachala, made it clear that the post of Lokayukta could not be kept vacant for long. The Karnataka Lokayukta Act specifies that only a person who has held the office of a judge of the Supreme Court or chief justice of a High Court can be appointed as Lokayukta. The Governor appoints the person recommended by the Government in consultation with the Chief Justice and presiding officers and leaders of the Opposition in the two Houses of the legislature.
