Rs. 5 lakhs earmarked for U-14 segment

VIJAYAWADA: A novel project aimed at unearthing the innate rural sporting talent is taking shape in Krishna district under the joint efforts of Krishna District Sports Authority, Krishna Industrial and Agricultural Exhibition Society and Department of Education.

The KDSA, with the support of Exhibition Society and Department of Education, has conceived the talent search scheme -- Kreeda Mahaprasthanam -- by earmarking a fund of Rs. 5 lakhs for identifying talent in under-14 age segment in few select sports and games.

    First of its kind

Says District Sports Development Officer B. Sudhakar: "This scheme is first of its kind in the State. We have selected volleyball, kabaddi, kho kho and events such as 100, 200, 400 metres and long jump in athletics. There is a reason for selecting these games and events. Krishna district is known for producing talented youngsters in these segments for decades," he pointed out.

According to the scheme, the Exhibition Society would spend Rs. 3 lakhs, while School Games Federation of India and District Sports Authority would contribute Rs 1.25 lakh and Rs.1.05 lakh respectively for the effective execution of the scheme.

DSA would take care of the training aspects of the identified talent.

"We have divided the district into 10 zones and in each zone around 200 youngsters are expected to take part in all the events. Coaches from Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh and SAI, along with the support of sports associations would select the prodigies."

The scheme would come into operation by the end of August.
