Mulayam Singh Yadav
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh said on Monday that those who had indulged in corrupt practices were posing as leaders of farmers. Addressing a function to mark the launch of a Shatabdi bus service at Vidhan Bhavan, he claimed that a particular leader had shown `babool' trees as sandalwood trees in his estate just to earn a quick buck. He said he could also write a book; in fact, he had made up his mind to pen one, but was deterred by his well-wishers. However, if he ever were to write one it would not be an account of politicians but on social and economic issues. Mr. Mulayam Singh accused the Centre of ignoring the interests of the State. While Haryana, Delhi and Punjab were being given more power supply than Uttar Pradesh, it had imposed a fine on the State, he said.
Charge against V.P. Singh
Senior Samajwadi leader Beni Prasad Verma told a press conference that the former Prime Minister, V.P. Singh, despite having served as Prime Minister and Chief Minister had made "no contribution" to development. He alleged that the Congress was "using" Mr. V.P. Singh to settle scores with Mr. Mulayam Singh."The hype notwithstanding, the fact remains that Mr. Singh does not have the interests of Muslims and backward classes in mind," he charged.
Compensation being paid
Shivpal Singh, PWD Minister, who was present at the press conference, said compensation was being paid to farmers for the land acquired for the Reliance plant at Dadri. He said the 3785 MW project would be completed in 2009.
