HIGH-LEVEL MEETING: School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu with department officials at a meeting on Monday.
CHENNAI:
A State level-task force will be constituted to study fatal road accidents involving schoolchildren. It will come up with an action plan to prevent accidents, said State Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu on Monday.
Following a meeting with officials of the Directorate of School Education, the Chennai Corporation, the Transport department, the City Police and heads of parent-teacher associations, the Minister told presspersons that the task force would study the problems of road safety of schoolchildren, both in urban and rural areas, in the next two months.
A uniform colour code for all school vehicles is under consideration.
"If all vehicles carrying school students are of the same colour with `school bus' or `school van' prominently written on them, those driving other vehicles will be more careful. The task force will decide the colour soon," he said. Non-governmental organisations would play a role in conducting refresher courses for drivers.
