SHIMOGA: Shimoga City Municipal Council (CMC) has taken up a drive to poison stray pigs in the city following reports that they had caused a serious health hazard. Over 600 stray pigs were reportedly found dead in various parts of the city on Monday morning. Deputy Commissioner and CMC Administrator T.K. Anilkumar and the Municipal Commissioner Jayanna had jointly warned the owners of pigs 15 days ago. The owners were told that the animals would be killed in the interest of the public health and convenience if they did not shift them from the city limits within 10 days. The municipal officials launched the drive on Monday morning after owners of stray pigs failed to shift them from the city limits before the deadline.
Drive backfires
Meanwhile, the drive against stray pigs reportedly caused the death of at least four cows, which reportedly consumed the poisonous food kept for pigs at Bapuji Nagar and Shivaji Road. Hindu Sene activists held a demonstration near the carcass of a cow demanding adequate compensation for its owners. The drive against the pigs had since been suspended for time being following the deaths of the cows.
