`Timely loans can help farmers'

Sensitisation programme inaugurated for Vijaya Bank managers in Shimoga zone

HUMANE APPROACH: Shimoga Zilla Panchayat deputy secretary (development) M.R. Ekanthappa inaugurating `sensitisation programme' for the branch managers of Vijaya Bank in Shimoga on Monday.

SHIMOGA: Shimoga Zilla Panchayat deputy secretary (development) M.R. Ekanthappa said here on Monday that the target set for disbursement of agricultural loan by lending institutions could not be achieved merely through juggling statistical figures.

"It is only through timely and adequate sanction of the loan that farmers could be brought into the mainstream of society," he said.

Inaugurating the "sensitisation programme" for branch managers of the Vijaya Bank for doubling the agricultural advances organised by the zonal office of the bank, he said it was ironical that March end had been fixed as the dead line to complete development works, which put pressure on the officials concerned to see that the funds sanctioned did not lapse. It had become necessary to formulate the time-bound programme for the extension of agricultural loan as was being done in other fields to achieve the desired results.

Deputy General Manager of Vijaya Bank K.J. Hegde, who was the chief guest, emphasised the need for doubling the agricultural advances to help the sector. Bank officers should see to that the loan advanced was utilised properly to prevent the borrowers from becoming defaulters.

He said the bank had a reason to show concern for farmers as it came into being with their support.

It was committed to implement the Government's direction to double agricultural advances.

Mr. Hegde said the bank proposed to advance Rs. 2,250 crore as the agricultural loan for financial year and that 35,000 new farmers would be given the Vijaya Krishi Cards.

He said it was proposed to advance Rs. 175 crore this year as agricultural loan through its 54 branches in Shimoga zonal office.

Joint Director of Agriculture B.H. Manjappa, Assistant General Manager of NABARD Krishna and Deputy Director of District Industries Centre R. Ganesh were present.

Zonal Manager of the Vijaya Bank (Shimoga) P. Sathish Shetty welcomed the gathering.

Chief Manager R. Balakrishna proposed a vote of thanks.
