ONGOLE: Katam Arunamma and Marella Venkata Seshaiah were unanimously elected chairperson and vice-chairperson respectively of Prakasam Zilla Parishad here on Monday. Earlier, the general body of the Zilla Parishad co-opted Shaik Shabir (Kanigiri) and Shaik Bude Saheb (Martur) as its members and elected Birudu Venkata Subbaiah (Ongole) as whip. Soon after her election, Mrs. Arunamma sought the cooperation of all the elected members in developing the district on all fronts. Referring to the problem of funds inherited from the earlier TDP regime, she sought the help of MLAs to get more funds from the State Government.
Own office
Mr. Venkata Seshaiah expressed anguish that the Zilla Parishad had to function from a rented building. He felt that the Zilla Parishad should construct its own office building as early as possible. District Collector B. Udaya Lakshmi who conducted the election explained the duties of the ZPTCs to ensure coordination between mandals and Zilla Parishad. There was jubilation in the Congress camp as the party won 52 of the total 56 ZPTCs and the party performance in Prakasam district was as good as that in Kadapa.
High hopes
Addressing a press conference earlier, DCC president G.V. Seshu expressed confidence that the Congress Government would certainly consider the good performance of the party in Prakasam district and reward it suitably.
Irrigation projects
The leaders attributed their success mainly to the irrigation projects of Gundlakamma, Velugonda, Ramatheertham and Ulichi taken up at a cost of Rs. 4,000 crore in Prakasam district besides Indiramma programme implemented in villages. Election results showed that the people had confidence that the YSR Government would keep all its promises, they said. APCC observers L. Eswara Rao (Guntur) and Kalpana Reddy (Gudur) appreciated the role played by the party MLAs in selecting the right candidates and working hard for their success and helping the party romp home creditably Complimenting Ongole MLA Balineni Sreenivasa Reddy for coordinating the efforts of all MLAs to ensure success, the Congress leaders hoped that he would be rewarded with a berth in the Cabinet.
