Rail over-bridge

Rail over-bridge

Construction of a rail over-bridge near the new bus stand in Tuticorin commenced three years ago. Only a few pillars were built. Thereafter, the work is left incomplete. It is irritating to see public money being wasted on facilities like this. The authorities concerned should do the needful to complete the construction for the benefit of all road-users.

Mayor election

This refers to the report "End of direct elections for Mayors, Municipal Chairmen? ( The Hindu , July 2). In the recently concluded local body elections in Andhra Pradesh, Mayors and Municipal Chairmen were elected indirectly. It showed the way. The Tamil Nadu Government should follow suit.

Pay-and-use toilets

Regarding whimsical charging by contractors at pay-and-use toilets, I would like to add one more point from hygienic point of view.

Washing hands with some cleaning materials is a must and contractors at these toilets should provide them to the users but nowhere in the South it is being done whereas in the North I have seen supply of at least the cheapest available powder, as it is mandatory there. I request the authorities to order provision of some cleaning materials at these toilets.

Train service

The Southern Railway has announced introduction of a train service from Manamadurai to Chennai on both directions. This is a long-felt need of the people of Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts. But the timings are not convenient. The train should leave at 7 p.m. on both directions so that they reach the destinations the following day at 6 a.m.

If the present timetable has to be accepted, the trains will arrive at both ends at 4.30 a.m. making it difficult for passengers to find suitable conveyance to reach their homes or places of work. Instead of departing at 5.30 p.m., they should depart at 7 p.m.

Will the authorities consider this suggestion for the sake of the public?

Asmabagh Anvardeen,

II

The Southern Railway has cancelled the services of Sethu Express and Rameswaram Passenger trains from July 15 in view of gauge conversion work. But pilgrims face hardship to go to Rameswaram. Therefore, I appeal to the authorities to run more trains from Manamadurai to Chennai via Madurai on broad gauge line.
