YSR denies TDP charge

Special Correspondent

Says he did not speak to Telugu Desam ZPTC members

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy has refuted the Telugu Desam's charges that he spoke to ZPTC members of that party to secure their support in the Zilla Parishad elections. He dared TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu to prove his party's charges.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, he said it was Mr. Naidu who had spoken to Congress ZPTC members in 2001 when he was Chief Minister and offered allurements to them. "Instead of proving the charges, Mr. Naidu says he will reveal the matter at an appropriate time. Is it the way a responsible Opposition leader behaves?" he asked.

Recalling an incident in the previous elections when Mr. Naidu reportedly spoke to the father of Tirupati rural ZPTC member, Bhaskar Reddy, he said the Congress was ready to prove its charges even now.

Poser to TDP

Dr. Reddy also took objection to the TDP's charges that irregularities in the voter lists had led to deletion of lakhs of names. He recalled that he had appealed to the people to enrol themselves a couple of weeks ago before the gram panchayat elections were notified. "What was the TDP president doing all these days without asking his party men to ensure enrolment of genuine voters," he asked.

Criticising Mr. Naidu for indulging in mudslinging on the Government, he asked the TDP president to prove his charges that the names of 80 lakh voters had been deleted from the voter lists. He also condemned the TDP for attributing motives to a constitutional body like the State Election Commission. "Let Mr. Naidu come out with details as to how many votes had been deleted instead of making attempts to provoke the people with his charges," he said.
