ALAPPUZHA: Payippad Boat Club, Payippad, which rowed the Payippad snake boat has won the Champakkulam Moolam boat race held on the Champakkulam river on Monday. In a scintillating final, the Payippad boat led by Suraj Alex, Sunil Bhavan, Payippad edged out Alappuzha Town Boat Club to emerge winners in the season's first boat race and lifted the Rajapramukhan trophy. The Alappuzha town boat club led by Reji Job, Vadakkethalakkal, which rowed the Champakkulam snake boat was the runner up. The Kavalam boat club led by Loppachan Joseph, which rowed the Sree Ganesh boat, finished third. The losers' final featured boats that finished second in the preliminary rounds. Brothers' Boat Club, Thennady, led by Baiju Pooppally, which competed in Jawahar Thayamkari emerged first. The second place in the losers' final went to Kuttanad Boat Club, Mampuzhakkary that competed in Karichal snake boat. In the Veppu A grade category, J.B. Club, Payippad that rowed the Punnathra Vengazhi boat emerged winners. The boat was led by Sreejith V. Nair. In the Iruttukuthi A grade category, Thripthi Boat Club, Thayamkari, which competed in Karuvelithara boat finished first. Francis Antony was its captain. Kuttanad MLA Thomas Chandy inaugurated the race in the absence of Law Minister M. Vijayakumar. Minister for Cooperation G. Sudhakaran inaugurated the valedictory meeting and distributed prizes to winners.
