Subramanyam Reddy is Chittoor ZP chief

Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI: Proceeding on expected lines, the election of the chairperson for Chittoor Zilla Praja Parishad turned out to be a smooth affair. In sharp contrast to the excitement which marked the elections for the ZP chiefs' post in some districts, it became a low key affair in Chittoor because the TDP, with its paltry tally of 16 against the Congress' massive 49 skipped the proceedings as the result is clearly a writing on the wall.

Though rumours started making rounds that the two incumbents -- Kumara Raja and Subramanyam Reddy would ultimately make it to the top slots in that order what none expected was that they would be made to swap their positions when the `sealed cover' from the high command was eventually opened.

The net result is that Subramanyam Reddy is now the Chairperson and Kumara Raja is the No. 2 in the Chittoor ZPP hierarchy.

What apparently weighed in favour of Subramanyam Reddy was the fact that he contested twice unsuccessfully against former Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in the TDP's Kuppam bastion.

Sympathy votes

This time the Congress campaign managers fielded him for the Shantipuram ZPTC in Kuppam segment with the hope that he would be able to garner the sympathy votes which he eventually did.

The high command also must have noted the dent he managed to cause to Naidu's image in his Kuppam stronghold by wresting the Shanthipuram ZPTC from the TDP.

Subramanyam Reddy's ascendancy to the ZP chief's post would be hard to digest for the Congress Chief Whip N. Kirankumar Reddy who hails from the district.

The ZPTC meeting held earlier has elected the following two as co-opted members: Subhan Khan Pathan of Karvetnagar and John Peter of Renigunta.
