16 more killed in rains

Lucknow: Sixteen people were killed in incidents of house collapse as heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed several parts of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday evening, taking the rain-related toll this season to 102.

Five people were killed in separate incidents of house collapse and uprooting of trees in Hardoi. Similarly, four deaths were reported from Bareilly district, two each from Bijnore, Lakhimpur Kheri and Gorakhpur districts and one from Jaunpur, official sources said on Monday.

Temperatures dipped sharply in majority of districts and the State Capital due to the rainfall, giving a respite to people from sultry weather conditions, the Met office said.

The city received heavy rains since Sunday evening, resulting in water-logging in many low-lying areas. Water levels of several important rivers in the State were rising following heavy rains in the catchment areas, the sources said.

The Ganga was rising all along its course from Hardwar to Ballia, while Ramganga and the Yamuna were rising in Moradabad and Etawah respectively, though they were still below the danger mark, the sources said.

Monsoon advances

Chandigarh: The South-West monsoon made further advancement and covered entire Punjab and Haryana, the Meteorological Department said here.

Most places in the two States did not receive much rain on Monday, but the forecast over the next two days says that many areas in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh could be lashed by moderate to rather heavy rains or thundershowers. Heavy rains are likely to occur in isolated places in the region, the Met office said.

Meanwhile, reports reaching here from Bhiwani and Sirsa districts of Haryana said that rainwater flooded several areas, affecting normal life.
