Keep Salem clean This is with reference to the report on dumping of garbage in Tirumanimutharu River. It may be mentioned that public at large are to be made aware of keeping Salem clean by desisting not only from dumping garbage in the river drains, roadsides, but by stopping open air defecation. If a token penalty or punishment is imposed on residents around, it may discourage them. A.V. Subrahmanyam Salem In bad shape Chattram Road in Salem is badly damaged by rain. Authorities concerned should take up repair works immediately. S. Arun Salem Herculean task One finds garbage removed in the city more frequently and there is also the talk of removing them during the night. The traffic police also seem to be active and have given an impressive statistics on the booking of offenders. Both the problems are Herculean in nature and a continuous effort is needed to keep the city free of traffic accidents and communicable diseases. Conservancy workers should be provided with proper dress and the traffic constables with masks and regular oxygen supply for them to perform efficiently. V.S. Venkatavaradan Salem Is he a postal employee? Among the venerable public sector edifices, I rate the India Post the most efficient and customer-friendly. But recently I had an unpleasant experience though I am not sure the department is directly involved. On June 15, my wife and myself approached the Fairland Post Office, Salem, to apply for Identity Cards. The officer-in-charge handed over the application forms which we filled, and affixed stamps for Rs.9/-each on the forms. He accepted the forms for sending to the HPO Salem for further action. On 19th June a person came to my office in the afternoon for verification (he had brought the application forms filled by us earlier) and said the ID cards will be issued by HPO in a few days. He charged Rs.150/- for each card. I paid the amount and when asked for receipt he said it would be given by the HPO. He did not disclose his name or identity. On June 26 when we went to HPO to collect the ID cards the Senior Postmaster told us that the cards are given free of charge. Then only we realised that we have been duped. We request you to direct the Salem HPO Senior Postmaster to investigate the incident and punish the culprit. Since he had with him our filled-up applications when he met me at my office, he must be an employee only. If not, how did he get the forms? I warn the public against such dishonest people. S. Anand Salem No response from Postal Department My cheque for Rs. 3,900 drawn on Post Office, Sooramangalam, Salem, presented through the State Bank of Mysore, FRC Branch, Salem-4, was returned for the reason "insufficient funds" on June 13, when there was a balance of Rs. 6,591 in my savings bank account. It was a clear deficiency of service. My complaints in this regard to the Superintendent of Post Offices, Salem on June 16, and another one to the Post Master General, Chennai on June 26 have not received any response. These complaints were sent by Certificate of Posting. If the Postal Department is keeping silent over the matter even after the receipt of my complaints, it is implied that they ignore such acts as well as customers' complaints. I hope that at least this letter will evoke some response from the concerned. S Lakshmi Narasimhan, Member, Consumer Voice, Meyyanur, Salem Elephant begging I wish to bring to your attention that a few people at Tirupur near Samundipuram area are often seen with an elephant which is used for begging. We have watched the stories of people who were killed by elephants. The authorities concerned should stop this before any untoward incident happens. R. Sarawanan Tirupur Road overbridge needed There are two manually operated railway level crossings in Udumalpet town- one near Udumalpet R.S., and the other on Dhally Road. These two gates are normally closed in daytime between 1) 6.45 and 0700 hrs. 2) 0940 and 0955 hrs 3) 1010 and 1025 hrs 4) 1115 and 1130 hrs. 5) 1300 and 1315 hrs. 6) 1510 and 1525 hrs 7) 1640 and 1655 hrs. 8) 1725 and 1750 hrs and 1810 and 1830 hrs. Udumalpet town has grown and as such lot of people have to cross these gates, especially students and lot of employed public have to impatiently wait resulting in unnecessary and quite avoidable delay. They are put to extreme hardships too. I, therefore request the authorities to construct atleast one road overbridge, preferably to the X-ing near Dhally Road, as it is a state highway which connects Kerala. G. Chandrasekaran Udumalpet Driving, a nightmare The National Highway-67 to Mettupalayam and Ooty is in a pitiful condition. The pleasure ride to Ooty is being spoilt because of this. There are at least some 20 `accident prone zone' barriers placed on the road. Most of the accidents occur not because of the negligence on the part of vehicle drivers but because of the poor condition of the road. Though it has been brought to the attention of authorities by a number of persons and newspapers, it is surprising that they are remaining silent. Karthik Arumugham, Coimbatore.
