CHENNAI: The first phase of single window counselling for admission to undergraduate medical courses that began here on Monday contained no surprises with all 11 toppers choosing Madras Medical College.

A total of 32 seats were filled on day one, including three under the ex-servicemen category. Sandhya Suresh, a student of D.A.V. Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Gopalapuram, who scored 299.25 marks, was the first to be handed over the allotment letter by Minister for Health and Family Welfare K.K.S.S.R Ramachandran.

The remaining ten toppers — V.C. Kalyanasundarabharthi (Kancheepuram); J. Lydia (Tirunelveli); V. Bharathram (Chennai); G. Rajarajan (Neyveli); M.U.M. Irshad Ahmed (Tiruchi); C. Prabhu Kumarappan (Coimbatore); T.C. Vivek Sandeep (Chennai); P.T. Durai Raaja (Erode); P. Aarthy (Thiruvarur) and N. Vignesh (Neyveli) — were subsequently handed over the letter.

In all, 1,645 seats (including 187 under Central quota) will be filled through the counselling which will end on July 17. Of the 1,458 seats under the State quota, 452 are under the open category, 437 Backward Class seats, 292 Most Backward Class seats, 262 Scheduled Caste seats and 15 Scheduled Tribe seats. "There will be no clash between the single window system of counselling and the entrance examinations being held for admission to private medical and engineering colleges on July 14, 15 and 16," Mr. Ramachandran said.

"While students can sit for the examinations, their parents can attend the counselling on their behalf."

Talks are on with private colleges on surrender of seats to the government pool, he said. All those given allotment letters must join the colleges of their choice by July 24. Classes will begin in all medical colleges by August 4. While fee for government quota seats will be Rs 4,000 a year, for management quota seats in private institutions, the annual fee is Rs. 1,30,000 as fixed by the Raman Committee.

Director of Medical Education P. Vijayalakshmi was present when the allotment letters were handed over.
