CHENNAI: Out of the $5 billion contributed by Standard Chartered Bank for worldwide tsunami rehabilitation efforts, $ one billion has been used in India. One of the many projects undertaken in the country is in the Semmancherikuppam in Kancheepuram district, south of Chennai. `A right collaboration of the corporate sector, the NGOs and the government could help the society greatly' said Regional head, corporate affairs for South Asia Summet Singla. Part of the bank's tsunami rehabilitation programme the project was accomplished with help from Inner Wheel Club of Madras, the woman's wing of the Rotary club and Scope International, a subsidiary of Standard Chartered.
Dedicated to the community
At a ceremony held on Saturday at Semancherikuppam, the renovated school, anganwadi and community centre were dedicated to the community.
Volunteers from the organisations spent their weekends in the village with the children. Kancheepuram Collector Pradeep Yadav was present on the occasion. At the function, prizes from previously won sports events were distributed.
Dance performance
The day ended with a dance performance by employees of the Standard Chartered Bank.
