CHENNAI: "I am Fami Vivekananda", lisped a saffron-clad six-year-old by way of introduction. He was one of the many national heroes on stage at the P.S. Higher Secondary School, Mylapore, on Saturday.

They were all part of the fancy dress event to celebrate the inauguration of the `Centenary Celebrations of Scouting Movement' by the South Madras Bharat Scouts and Guides.

A few steps away, a fellow Cub `Bharathiar' was taking strong objection to the foliage that his mother was trying to attach to his hairless upper lip. He finally acknowledged that any Bharathiar worth his salt has to have a moustache, and consented to one being pencilled on while a group of Bulbuls giggled relentlessly.

About 800 Scouts, Guides, Cubs and Bulbuls took part in the events that included drawing and singing competitions and a quiz programme on 100 years of the Scouting Movement. Lord Baden Powell started the movement in 1907. The participants were from 18 schools.

The teams got to test their mettle against each other and find out who was more prepared, as the motto of the movement is `Be Prepared'.

Grubby-kneed Scouts swapped `Good Deed for the Day' stories — "I helped my mother carry vegetables this morning," said Mahesh, while his friend piped up that he helps his mother pump water everyday.

Scouts and Guides are aged 11 to 19 while Cubs and Bulbuls are 5-10 years old.

The event was sponsored by Rotary International 3230 Youth Service Team.
