GUNTUR: The Joint Action Committee of various student organisations in the city conducted a ballot among the students and parents to elicit their opinion on the recent hike in the tuition fee of various professional courses. The JAC conducted the ballot on Monday evening at the UTF hall in the city. An overwhelming majority of 2,611 of the 2,740 students and their parents who took part in the programme opposed the fee hike while 107 students supported the hike; 28 others chose to be neutral. Representatives of all major political parties, barring the Congress, took part. Communist Party of India (Marxist) district leader D. Narsimha Rao, Communist Party of India city unit secretary Jangala Ajay Kumar, Telugu Yuvatha district unit secretary Kommineni Sambasiva Rao, CPI (ML-New Democracy) leader Samrajyam and representatives of various student organisations took part. The leaders warned of an agitation on a bigger scale if the Government did not withdraw the fee hike. "The JAC will not hesitate to disrupt the counselling process if the Government fails to address the genuine concerns of the student community," Mr. Narsimha Rao said.
