Italy all the way

Even before Italy won the prestigious World Cup at Berlin, they had won at Vijayawada, on Saturday by defeating `Brazil' in the final. Sounds intriguing? The M&M FIFA Cup for school children at IGMC stadium organised by District Sports Authority had all the trappings of the FIFA soccer show. Much to the surprise of everyone, Care and Share `A' outfit wearing the jersey of `Italy' outplayed `Brazil.'

Pundits predicted the victory of `Brazil' represented by KCP Siddhartha Adarsh Residential School over `Italy,' but the boys from Buddhavaram wrote new history at Vijayawada by winning the coveted trophy. It is just a coincidence on Sunday, the real Italians derailed Zinedine Zidane's juggernaut.

Vice-Chancellor of Acharya Nagarjuna University V. Balamohandas has a penchant for acronyms to stress the importance of values. At a recent meeting of principals of colleges of education held at Y.V. Rao Siddhartha College of Education, Prof. Balamohandas laid special emphasis on discipline among teachers. Perseverance, principles, resourcefulness and competitiveness were important attributes for being effective principals. In the fast changing scenario, one might be attracted to materialistic pursuits. "If you are under this spell, you cannot be sincere in teaching. A liquor shop licence would seem a better proposition. No wonder if anybody thought of it," he said, triggering laughter in the hall.

A TDP corporator sprang a surprise by seeking to know why the photograph of Minister for Municipal Administration Koneru Ranga Rao was left out in the booklet released on citizens' partnership for city development. Her question in a protesting tone triggered a round of applause from Mayor Tadi Sakuntala and ruling party corporators for her concern for protocol despite political differences. But could it also be because Ms. Vimala Kumari had a Congress connection? (Her husband worked for the Congress for long).

The beginning and end of the swearing-in by the newly elected ZPTC members of Krishna Zilla Parishad on Monday had some speciality. Bethapudi Kumari (Congress), ZPTC member from Agiripalli, was first to take oath in the morning and she struggled to correctly read out the sentences in Telugu. The last to take the oath in the afternoon was Velamarthi Raju (TDP), ZPTC member from Unguturu, who read out the text in a high-pitched voice and in a jiffy.
