CHENNAI: The modern judge is the maker of economic and social reforms, apart from interpreting the law and adjudicating disputes, said Justice P.D. Dinakaran of the Madras High Court on Monday.
Red-tapism
Addressing a batch of directly recruited district judges here, Justice Dinakaran said judges should avoid delay in disposal of cases. "Long adjournments kill the spirit of the litigant and therefore red tapism should be avoided," he said. "The judicial seat is not an ivory tower and the purpose of sitting is not to please anybody," he said, adding, "justice according to conscience is expected from every judge."
Responsibility
"Judgeship is not a job, not a profession nor an employment. It is the responsibility cast on the judge towards the society," Justice Dinakaran said. "What a judge earns is not salary or remuneration; but it is a reward by the society for discharging a divine responsibility. Therefore, the post of a judge should be considered not in terms of the power but in terms of responsibility."
Legal acumen
Stressing the need for fine-tuning the legal acumen of judicial officers, the judge said society would be the ultimate beneficiary. The function was organised by the Director of the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy and District Judge, S. Vimala. A total of 10 district judges were directly recruited in December 2004. After several months' training, they were posted to various Sessions Courts on July 5.
