Coimbatore : The Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City, Karan Singha, has cautioned the drivers and vehicle owners of stringent action if found taking more passengers over and above the seating capacity and for over speeding. The measure is aimed to ensure discipline among drivers and to make roads safer. The drive will focus on vehicles carrying schoolchildren. Action can be right from registering cases, suspension or cancellation of driving licence. Further, the Transport Department is also stepping up its drive against such violations. The penal measures to be invoked by the department would include highest penalty, suspension or cancellation of licence, fitness certificate and permit besides impounding the vehicle. The drive came into effect on Monday (July 10). The Commissioner has requested the drivers of autorickshaws, share autorickshaws, cars, taxis and maxi-cabs to refrain from resorting to overloading and over speeding practices, which are clear violation of the motor vehicle rules.
