This Day That Age
Prime Minister Nehru on July 10 received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws of the National University of Ireland. The degree was conferred on him by Mr. Eamon de Valera, the veteran fighter for Irish freedom, who is Chancellor of the university. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Michael Tierney, said Mr. Nehru's presence had given them a chance to do what many of them had long wished to do - "confer the highest honour in our power on the Prime Minister and leader of a great country between whose people and our own there has existed for a long period a powerful bond of sympathy and mutual understanding born of similar experience. Although India is a sub-continent and her people are the second most numerous in the world, and although she belongs to the far side of Asia, while we are a small nation, we have been linked together by our common subjection to a great imperial power which has now relaxed its hold on us both. In our own struggle for independence we had at all times the sympathy of the Indian people and often active help of individual Indians.''
