NCP leader Chavan dead

MUMBAI: Rajya Sabha MP and senior Nationalist Congress Party leader Vasant Chavan (64) died here on Tuesday.

He suffered a cardiac arrest during sleep in his room at the old MLAs' hostel, party sources said.

A former Minister, Mr. Chavan is survived by his wife and son.

Born on October 16, 1942 at Deolali camp in Nasik, he was a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1980 to 1985.

He was a member of the Council from 1986 to 2004. Since the last three days, Mr. Chavan was in Mumbai to conduct the NCP organisational elections as the Chief Returning Officer.

Several leaders paid their last respects to the departed leader. — PTI
