PONDICHERRY: Pondicherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy has written to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil seeking conferment of statehood with special category status on Pondicherry, which is now a Union Territory. He told The Hindu here on Tuesday that his Government had fulfilled most of the assurances given to the people. The holding of the civic polls in three phases between June 27 and July 1 to constitute elected civic bodies after a gap of 38 years here was one of the major promises his Government could fulfil, he added. Mr. Rangasamy said that the other important work he was now concentrating on was the procurement of statehood with special category status for Pondicherry. "I have written to the Union Home Minister reiterating the demand. I hope the Centre will concede the plea," he said.
